The Jatapu belong to the Kui-Kuvi branch of Central Dravidian languages. This Kondh and Telugu speaking people are mainly found in Narayanpatna block of the district. The Jatapu predominantly work as farmers and forest laborers. Rice is their staple crop, and grains, peas, beans, chilies, and tobacco leaves are also grown. In addition, they collect and sell minor forest produce. The Jatapu only marry within their own tribe, but never within the same clan (extended family). The male members of the tribe can be identified by their limited dressing which generally consists of a loin cloth gochi wrapped around waist.
